What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural oil that has been extracted from the hemp plant. It’s just one of more than 100 cannabinoids that can be extracted from hemp! And while CBD is one of the most famous, research shows that CBD is actually most effective when it works together with other cannabinoids (this is called the “entourage effect”). See more in our answer about the difference between full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate below.

While the strengths of CBD have been known for centuries, CBD has only come into the limelight over the past few years. (Much of this is due to the passage of the 2018 federal Farm Bill – more on this below.) Many people have since discovered the joy of CBD for themselves.

It is important to understand that CBD is different from the THC in marijuana. CBD is not intoxicating and will not give you a “high.”

What does CBD do?

One of the many systems in the human body is the endocannabinoid system. Simply put, it is a vast network of receptors that communicate with nearly every system in the body, including the central nervous system, immune system, and organs. This system helps regulate your anti-inflammatory response, immune system, appetite, mood, anxiety levels, sleep schedule, and more.

CBD is one of over a hundred types of cannabinoids found in hemp plants. CBD and other cannabinoids fit into the receptors of the endocannabinoid system.

What are the benefits of CBD?

Different people experience different benefits of CBD. The most common benefits are a sense of calm, relaxation, focus, balance, stress relief, sleep support, and pain relief. Research around the benefits of CBD continues to uncover more ways it can support optimal health.

Is CBD marijuana?

Country Lane CBD products are made with CBD derived from hemp – not marijuana. And while hemp and marijuana are closely related, they are not the same.

The main difference is the two plants’ levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana users a “high.” Hemp is grown to have very low THC (legally, hemp can contain no more than .3% of THC). Marijuana, on the other hand, is grown to have much higher THC concentrations and is still federally illegal.

Hemp plants contain over 100 different types of compounds. One of the other compounds in hemp is CBD, which is non-psychoactive, meaning it will not give you a high.

Is there any THC in CBD?

Unlike marijuana, which has higher levels of high-inducing THC, hemp contains no more than .3% of THC. Whether there is THC in CBD depends on the product you use. For example, our full spectrum products, like our goat milk lotion, soaps, soaks, pet oil, and relief gel, contain less than .3% THC. Our broad-spectrum products, including our CBD oils for people, are THC-free.

Is CBD legal?

The 2018 federal Farm Bill removed hemp from the controlled substance list, and legalized the growth, production, and manufacturing of hemp. It also legalized hemp-derived CBD products, as long as the THC content is less than 0.3%. However, the bill gave states the right to implement their own CBD restrictions, so laws vary from state to state.

Under the federal bill, marijuana, which comes from the same plant family as hemp, remains a drug.

Who can use CBD?

A wide variety of people can use CBD (including our furry family members – more on this below!). However, as with all supplements, you may want to check with your doctor if you have questions or concerns.

Can I give my dog CBD?

If you’re like us, you want the very best for your four-legged family members! We were thrilled to discover that dogs can enjoy hemp-derived CBD in many of the same ways as their owners. As part of your pet’s diet, CBD oil can be added to their food or treats. (Check out our Prime Cut CBD Oil for Pets!)

What is the difference between full spectrum, broad spectrum, CBD isolate, and help oil?

If you’ve been researching different CBD products, you have likely seen terms like “full spectrum,” “broad spectrum,” “CBD isolate” and “hemp oil.” Confused yet? Here are the highlights of what that means:

  • Full spectrum means the product contains all of the hemp plant’s naturally occurring compounds (there are over 100 of them!). This means you’re not only getting the goodness of CBD, but also all the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and fatty acids. Many of these compounds complement each other and work best together. It’s important to note that full spectrum CBD does contain low levels of THC. But remember – hemp-derived CBD only has up to .3% THC, so full spectrum CBD is non-intoxicating and will not give you a high.
  • Broad spectrum CBD products also include a variety of naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and fatty acids from the hemp plant. However, the THC has been extracted to non-detectable levels.
  • CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like: pure, isolated CBD. It is produced through an extraction process that removes all other cannabinoids, including THC. Country Lane offers full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD products, as we believe the hemp plant properties work best together to offer more benefit than CBD alone (this is called the “entourage effect”).
  • Hemp oil is produced by pressing hemp seeds. While hemp oil is filled with essential fatty acids, the oil contains little to no cannabinoids, and doesn’t offer the same benefits as full or broad spectrum CBD.

How do you take CBD?

You can take CBD either topically or orally. Country Lane CBD offers several different types of products so you can experience the benefits of CBD in the way that’s best for you:

  • CBD oils/tinctures/drops: These are taken orally, by placing under the tongue.
  • CBD lotions/topicals/skin cream/gels: These are massaged into the skin, usually onto sore joints or muscles.
  • CBD bath soaks/salts: These are added to bath water for a relaxing soak – a great alternative to bubble bath!
  • CBD for pets: This oil can be placed on food or directly in your pet’s mouth.

Read the suggested use for each product before using.

How much CBD should I use?

When it comes to CBD doses or serving sizes, there is no “one-size-fits-all” answer. What works for one person may not work for another, so you’ll need to find the appropriate amount to achieve your best results.

When trying CBD products for the first time, it is best to start small. Read the labels and suggested uses carefully, as different products have different concentrations of CBD.

Country Lane CBD offers a range of products with varying CBD content, so you can choose the product that works best for you. For example, our bath soaks have 450 mg of CBD, while our CBD oils and CBD lotions have 2,000 mg per bottle.

If you have questions or concerns, talk with your doctor to determine the recommended product and amount of CBD for you based on your personal health, existing conditions, medications and supplements. This is especially important if you are taking medications, as some are not recommended to be taken with CBD.
